In 2018, The University of Manchester, Cancer Research UK and The Christie, announced plans for the future of the Paterson building site at The Christie on Wilmslow Road.

Together they decided to build and develop a new world-class transformational research facility, bringing together the largest group of scientists, doctors and nurses in Europe. The new facility is set to be twice the size of the original building, which was significantly damaged by a fire in 2017.

Cast Contracting ltd (CCL) was contracted for the Design, supply and installation of the basement waterproofing, working jointly with PUDLO Products Limited, Cidon Construction and Vinci Construction UK Limited.

CCL worked closely with PUDLO and Cidon over the Design, Specification and Construction of the Basement Structure. CCL and Cidon utilised PUDLO’s Design Services throughout the project, whilst CCL were able to react within Cidon’s intense construction program.

CCL installed PUDLO Membrane BW (Sodium Bentonite waterproofing system) to the secant piled walls and concrete blinding. PUDLO CWP Waterproof Concrete was then installed to the Retaining wall and Basement Slab.

Given the end nature of the structure, an additional internal drainage channel was designed at the wall/floor junction to ensure a Grade 3 Habitable Environment is provided internally.

The project team worked in very challenging environments due to Covid and timescales on-site with minimal storage. This meant deliveries had to be scheduled just in time.

Jamie Tschumi, Director of Cast Contracting Ltd said “It has been great working alongside PUDLO on this prestigious job, their proactive approach and helpful nature has been a huge advantage supporting CCL achieve their tight deadlines. The support from both companies resulted in a smooth and professional installation process on-site, with any issues being able to be addressed as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Communication was key with the following trades to ensure the membrane wasn’t damaged and the highest installation quality could be upheld.

PUDLO prides itself not only on having top quality products, but providing a dedicated on-site service. Our Site Inspectors visited the site over 50 times to be on-hand to offer advice and product information, allowing us to issue a 30-year performance warranty on this project.

Work continues on the external cladding of the building, with the exterior set to be finished by the end of March 2023. The Paterson building will be complete and operational early in 2023.

By then, the Paterson building will be at the centre of ambition to lead the world in clinical trial recruitment – supporting the advancement of new and kinder cancer therapies.
